Bio21

The University of Melbourne’s Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute seeks to improve human health and the environment through innovation in molecular life sciences and biotechnology, driven by collaborative research and dynamic interactions with industry.

Bio21’s beautiful complex of architecturally designed and purpose-built buildings, including the Nancy Millis and Ruth Bishop buildings, house a diverse and active scientific community of > 800 research and professional staff members, students and industry scientists from a range of STEMM disciplines. Over 40 academic research groups from the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, Science and Faculty of Engineering and IT use molecular approaches to solve scientific problems.

Bio21 is a key research technology hub in the Parkville Biomedical Precinct, with platform technology facilities that are equipped with powerful instruments that form a pipeline for early stage drug discovery: Melbourne Magnetic Resonance, Melbourne Protein Characterisation, Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics, Metabolomics Australia and the Ian Holmes Imaging Centre.

Bio21 fosters industry-academic collaborations and supports the Victorian biotechnology industry including strategic partnerships with CSL, housing the CSL Global Hub for Translational Research as well as industry groups Alterity Pharmaceuticals, Cyclotek, Gertrude Biomedical; Rhythm Biosciences, SYNthesis group, and Therapeutic Innovation Australia in our incubator space.

BioCurate

BioCurate is a bold, collaborative venture, dedicated to translating Australian medical research and delivering health and economic benefits to the world. Our mission is to grow the Victorian and Australian biotech sector by translating medical research outputs into high quality pre-clinical candidates for the bio-pharmaceutical industry, venture capital companies and philanthropic funding agencies.

Breakthrough Victoria

Breakthrough Victoria is an Australian investment company established in 2021 to manage the Victorian Government’s $2 billion Breakthrough Victoria Fund. We invest in innovation for impact – supporting companies to commercialise new technologies that will create jobs and investment in the state of Victoria and have a positive impact on people’s lives.

Cell Therapies

Cell Therapies Pty Ltd is one of the most experienced contract manufacturers of global cellular therapy products. For over 20 years, Cell Therapies has provided essential infrastructure for delivery of cellular therapeutics into clinical trials and commercial markets around the world. Cell Therapies’ facility comprises 13 clean rooms located at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute in Melbourne, Australia. These facilities are available on a fee-for-service basis to the world’s leading cell therapy companies. This facility is licensed by the Australian TGA for GMP manufacturing of T-cell products for clinical and commercial supply, ensuring that our clients’ products meet regulatory standards.

Health Security Systems Australia, a division of DMTC Limited

Health Security Systems Australia (HSSA), a division of DMTC Limited, leads and manages collaborative programs and projects to develop products and decision-support systems for the protection of both military and civilian personnel against Chemical, Biological and Radiological (CBR) threats, emerging infectious diseases and pandemics. HSSA builds on DMTC's credibility in the defence and national security sectors and is backed by DMTC's internationally-accredited systems for quality and collaboration, and flexible engagement and contracting mechanisms.

MCRI

The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) is Australia’s leading child health research organisation and ranked equal second globally. Over 1,700 clinicians and scientists and 72 research groups operate under five thematic areas of medical research – Genomics; Stem Cell Medicine; Infection, Immunity & Global Health; Clinical Sciences; and Population Health. The breadth of research at MCRI spans discovery, trials, intervention, translation, and large-scale global implementation. MCRI is unique in Australia in its co-location and shared governance with Australia’s leading tertiary paediatric hospital, The Royal Children’s Hospital, and Australia’s leading University, the University of Melbourne’s Department of Paediatrics. Medicines Development for Global Health

Medicines Development for Global Health is an Australian not-for-profit company founded in 2005 to address health inequity by researching, developing and delivering new and affordable medicines for diseases disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries. Medicines Development for Global Health's core skill is pharmaceutical development and regulatory science in the context of global health, bringing a novel approach to addressing health inequity. The company is developing moxidectin and dovramilast (previously CC11050/AMG634) for seven underserved diseases of global importance.

The Florey

The Florey is Australia’s leading brain research institute with a focus on improving the lives of people with neurological and psychiatric conditions. The Florey’s research missions are centred around dementia, epilepsy, mental health and developing ways to protect and repair the brain. These missions are strengthened by The Florey’s expertise in neurotherapeutic discovery and development, neuroimaging, synaptic biology and systems neuroscience. With 600 researchers, The Florey is the largest research centre of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

The Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS)

The Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS) integrates research from five fundamental research themes to identify, develop, optimise and deliver new drug treatments. These research themes are Drug Discovery Biology, Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Candidate Optimisation, Drug Delivery, Disposition and Dynamics, and Medicine Use and Safety. MIPS key therapeutic program areas are in neuroscience and mental health, metabolic and cardiovascular disease and global health.

MTPConnect

MTP Connect is an independent, not-for-profit organisation, which was formed as part of the Federal Government’s Industry Growth Centres Initiative and aims to accelerate the growth of the medical technology, biotechnology and pharmaceutical (MTP) sector in Australia. Their mission is to forge stronger connections between research and industry to help maximise opportunities for Australians to make scientific and technological breakthroughs, and to see them developed through the proof-of-concept stage and successfully translated and commercialised. In this way, MTPConnect is building a more resilient and competitive medical products sector.

MTPConnect addresses the Sector Growth Priorities and constraints and gaps identified in the sector including focus on four key areas:

• Increasing collaboration and commercialisation across the sector

• Improving management and workforce skills

• Improving access to global supply chains and international markets

• Optimising the regulatory environment

VCCC Alliance

The VCCC Alliance is Australia’s first and most ambitious comprehensive cancer centre: a joint venture of 10 member institutions, integrating cancer research, education and clinical care. Our members are academic, clinical and medical research institutions that are each leaders in their own right. The alliance brings the strengths of these organisations together, generating a critical mass of expertise, patient numbers and resources, underpinned by a pledge to work collaboratively towards shared goals in cancer control.

Our approach of dynamic, inclusive, system-level collaboration coupled with world-class cancer education and the involvement of consumers, helps to accelerate the translation of scientific evidence into better outcomes for all Victorians affected by cancer.

WEHI

WEHI is where the world’s brightest minds collaborate and innovate to make discoveries around cancer, immune health and infection, development and healthy aging, new medicines and advanced technologies and computational biology to help us live healthier for longer.

WEHI is home to the National Drug Discovery Centre, an initiative that offers Australian medical researchers access to a fully staffed facility with drug screening expertise and the latest in robotic high-throughput technologies.
